Strategic Investing With Fritz Meyer

Fritz Meyer examines September payroll growth and job openings alongside business surveys, household wealth and consumer finances.

New evidence of the wealth concentration held by older Americans supports Fritz's thesis on spending resilience.

Participants evaluate the lower third-quarter GDPNow estimate, AI and productivity, updated earnings expectations and stock valuations.

The class also addresses the Federal Reserve’s September rate increase, inflation, Treasury yields and federal funding pressures, using historical context to explain investment risk and the limits of forecasts.

Learning objectives:
This class presents an opportunity to learn to:

  • Test war and AI concerns. Evaluate the cited 4% average stock-market decline around geopolitical events and 10% workforce growth over two years among AI adopters, explaining why these observations cannot guarantee future market or employment outcomes.
  •  Identify expansion despite mixed signals. Interpret September manufacturing PMI of 54.5 and services PMI of 54.9, with new orders at 55.3 and 59.8, to explain continued expansion alongside housing weakness.
  • Explain the hiring slowdown. Assess September’s 29,000 payroll gain and 4.2% unemployment alongside 7.1 million openings and 7.1 million job seekers, distinguishing weaker demand from demographic constraints on hiring.
  • Explain the age divide in spending power. Analyze the cited 2022–2025 wealth increase of 37% for Americans 75 and older versus a 23% decline for those under 35, alongside 5.6% year-over-year disposable-income/outlay growth and 4.1% saving.
  • Distinguish bank reserves from spendable balances. Explain why the deck’s fourfold expansion of the monetary base under quantitative easing differed from fiscal transfers that increased M2 by placing funds directly in household and business accounts.
  • Reconcile competing growth forecasts. Compare the decline in annualized third-quarter GDPNow from 4.4% to 3.6% with the Conference Board’s 1.9% 2026 forecast, distinguishing quarterly estimates from annual forecasts and productivity-driven growth potential.
  •  Explain compounding and the equity premium. Use the deck’s approximately 10% historical annual total return, combining 7.9% price appreciation and 2.1% from reinvested dividends, to explain curved arithmetic-scale charts, straight logarithmic trends and compensation for volatility.
  • Test the earnings support for valuations. Evaluate projected operating EPS of $365.38 in 2026 and $423.08 in 2027, representing 34.7% and 15.8% growth, against forward P/E ratios and the risk that forecasts disappoint.
  • Separate policy changes from projection measures. Explain the September rate hike to 3.75%–4% and the rise in median 2026 PCE inflation to 3.7%, despite an unchanged 3.5%–3.7% central tendency, when interpreting yields and equity risk.
  • Evaluate Social Security funding alternatives. Analyze the proposal to remove the $184,500 wage cap on the 12.4% Social Security payroll tax and compare consumption-tax alternatives, explaining effects on revenue and higher earners without treating proposals as law.
